Harvesting History summer recap and photos

Updated: Sep 7, 2023

Our garden educator, Leslie Reed, is always cooking up something fun with Harvesting History! Check out our photo album from our busy summer with Camp Oakdale and Operation Unite New York.

Camp Oakdale

Another summer with Camp Oakdale is in the books! This year, our educators brought a variety of activities to camp. Together, we made:

  • seed germination necklaces

  • fresh salsa using the bicycle blender and ingredients from Black Horse Farms and Holmquest Farms

  • macrame bracelets

  • journals with marbled covers

  • seed paper

  • herbed ice cream

Operation Unite New York (OUNY)

Highlights from the season with OUNY include:

  • Planting, maintaining, harvesting, and snacking from the gardens at OUNY and In Flight.

  • Our yearly tradition of picking local strawberries and using a bicycle-powered blender to offer free red smoothies to the community for Juneteenth.

  • Baking (and eating!) Upstate NY grape pie .

  • Entering vegetables and garlic salt into the Columbia County Fair.

  • Winning lots of blue ribbons at the fair!

More Harvesting History to come!

While we're sad to see summer go, we're equally excited for fall garden fun to start up again, now that school is back in session.
